Golden Gate-bron, den berömda hängbron i Kalifornien, började byggas den 5 januari 1933 - alltså för idag 75 år sedan. Bron invigdes 28 maj 1937 och är 2 150 m lång med ett brospann på 1 280 m. Den var länge världens längsta hängbro.
Stålbalkarna till bron tillverkades av på östkusten. De transporterades med tåg till kusten, för att sedan skeppas till San Francisco via Panamakanalen. Stora kranar lyfte upp balkarna som fästes med bultar. Under byggnationen miste 11 personer livet. När bron byggdes var det ibland vindar över 20 m/s som blåste. Det tog fyra år att måla bron med den typiska rödbruna färgen som skyddar konstruktionen mot angrepp från väder och vind samt gör den synlig i dimma.
Bron används flitigt av människor som reser över sundet och bron är idag en av de mest kända broarna och en av de tre största. De flesta föredrar att åka över bron istället för att åka färja.
Bron har bara stängts av ett fåtal gånger under sin existens, då på grund av höga vindhastigheter, statsbesök eller underhåll.
I dess närhet ligger det så beryktade tidigare fängelset Alcatraz, som numera är stängt som fängelse men utgör ett turistmål. Här vistades bl a Al Capone. Under åren fängelset fanns rymde 33 fångar av vilka 11 dog.
